When the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) opens in April 2017 it will revolutionise healthcare on the Coast and offer a range of free public hospital services. The SCUH will be a tertiary teaching hospital designed to meet the growing demand for hospital services as well as offer further opportunity to train local residents to be the health workforce of the future.

As the hub in an integrated network of accessible healthcare, the SCUH will complement the new Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct that will transform the health industry on the Sunshine Coast and create thousands of local jobs. The hospital will open with approximately 450 beds with the remaining capacity of 738 beds expected to be commissioned by 2020/21. The hospital has been planned to allow further expansion up to a total of 900 beds. Highly trained and specialised staff will care for patients with complex or life-threatening conditions, meaning about 10,000 patients each year will not have to travel to Brisbane for complex treatments.

By developing an integrated health campus incorporating the public tertiary teaching facility of the SCUH with the Sunshine Health Institute and Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, the benefits that come from locating these services together are maximised. Hands-on training and education facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students and staff can be offered, while research opportunities are enhanced by combining expert staff, specialised medical services and technological capacity. Integrating infrastructure developments such as public transport with the two hospitals provides better access as well as value for money for the public and will drive other health-related commercial opportunities.

The project will create thousands of jobs during construction and when each stage of the hospital opens in 2017, 2018 and 2021. The new hospitals will help to diversify the coast’s industry base and generate secondary flow-on business opportunities created by the service needs of the hospital workforce and their families. The project will boost the local economy and be the catalyst for local commercial and residential development.
