Our People: Michael Zaghini – Head of Research

Research is the foundation of Mosaic's unique, integrated approach to managing every aspect of the development process. It has played an especially critical role in navigating the uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic this year. Heading our Research team is Michael, who consistently monitors and reports on key economic indicators and market drivers, supporting Mosaic, its stakeholders, and customers with making pivotal decisions.

What did you do before coming to Mosaic?

I studied Architecture and Property Economics at QUT.

What attracted you to join Mosaic?

There were multiple reasons that Mosaic appealed to me as an employer. Ultimately, however, it was the staff profiles and team videos portraying Mosaic’s culture and working environment which convinced me there was no alternative.

What do you do at Mosaic?

Broadly speaking, the research team monitor and analyse what is occurring in the economy and across markets, including but certainly not limited to those directly involving property. Our core role is to ensure those within the wider business, our stakeholders, and clients remain informed and educated about the environment we operate in. The insights gained help guide decision making across the entire development process from site identification and acquisitions though to settlement and leasing.

How long have you worked at Mosaic?

Just over 3.5 years ago. I initially undertook a short period of work experience, after which I was offered a position as a research analyst.

In your role at Mosaic, what are you most passionate about?

Understanding data and how it can be applied to achieving practical outcomes.

How does Mosaic stand apart from other developers?

By taking a holistic, long-term approach to building a trusted brand that consistently delivers a product that meets the needs and desires of end-users.

Describe Mosaic in one word.

Steadfast.

What do you love most about coming to work every day?

No day is the same, each presents new learning experiences and challenges to overcome.

What advice could you offer to anyone starting out or wanting to work in the property industry (in your field of expertise or otherwise)?

Learn to walk before you run. Be patient, take the time to develop exceptional core skills, and understandings in the field you are passionate about. A strong grounding in the fundamentals will ultimately help you to achieve more in the long run.

What advice could you offer to anyone wanting to have a career in a challenging benchmark business like Mosaic?

Determine exactly what you want to do and why, but be open to all the alternate pathways and opportunities that can get you to where you want to go.

How do you balance the demands of business and personal commitments?

By realising that work and personal life are co-dependent and equally important. If you neglect either of them the other will eventually suffer.

How do you like to relax/spend your downtime?

Getting out on or under the water clears my mind and helps me reset.

What would you attribute as a driving factor to your career success at Mosaic?

Having someone exceptional to learn from, and the transferable skills gained from the diversity of my previous career and educational experiences. No one succeeds in anything without leveraging upon the learnings and experiences of others. I have been fortunate to have numerous people who have provided me with opportunities and taken the time to pass on their knowledge and skills.

What do you find challenging and/or rewarding about working at Mosaic?

Mosaic is constantly evolving, and therefore requires individuals within the business to adapt and grow with it. This is what makes working at Mosaic challenging, but equally rewarding. Contributing in some small way to the extraordinary outcomes and shared successes this leads to is extremely satisfying and fulfilling.
