Brisbane is set to welcome its first dedicated mega cruise ship terminal, with construction underway on the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd’s (PBPL) $158M Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at Luggage Point on the north side of the Brisbane River.

The cruise terminal will serve as an important piece of transport infrastructure for Queensland; maximising the state’s share of the cruise ship market, increasing tourist numbers, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy.

Queensland is Australia’s top cruise destination with new figures showing the industry now contributes $1.1 billion to the state’s economy and supports more than 4000 jobs across the State, while Brisbane is now Australia’s second biggest cruise port after Sydney and will continue to grow further as we enhance our infrastructure and experiences.

Brisbane provides the ideal starting point for short cruises to Northern Queensland and the South Pacific as well as being a popular tourist destination and jumping off point to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

The facility will accommodate some of the world’s most luxurious mega cruise ships allowing these mega-cruisers to utilise Brisbane as a base port, transforming the city into a major cruise destination.

The proposed design of the terminal building will create a pleasant, intuitive and memorable experience through holistic consideration of the passenger’s journey from the ‘kerb to cabin’. Covering around 9,300 square metres over two levels, the terminal will be connected to a 200-metre wharf by two air bridges for passengers to exit and enter ships.

The terminal is expected to inject more than a billion dollars into the Queensland economy and create hundreds of jobs.

Site preparation works will start in November, with construction of the wharf to begin mid-next year and construction of the terminal to start in around 12 months.
